SmartV Hybrid Cloud Architecture

Author: Vishal Verma (Cloud, Network & Systems Engineer, Sydney, NSW) | Category: Cloud Infrastructure & IaC | Key Metric: 99.99% Multi-AZ SLA

Technology Stack: Microsoft Azure, VMware vSphere, Terraform, Azure Traffic Manager, Site-to-Site VPN

Overview

Designed and deployed a highly available hybrid cloud architecture bridging on-premises VMware workloads with Microsoft Azure.

Architecture & Technical Implementation

SmartV Hybrid Cloud was a major infrastructure initiative that bridged on-premises VMware vSphere workloads with Microsoft Azure. The goal was to provide seamless failover, automated disaster recovery, and elastic compute for enterprise applications.

Using Terraform, the entire infrastructure—including Virtual Networks, ExpressRoute/VPN gateways, NSGs, and recovery vaults—was defined as code, allowing rapid provisioning and deterministic environments. The architecture achieved a 99.99% SLA by utilizing Azure Availability Zones and Traffic Manager.

Key Outcomes

Delivered deterministic infrastructure provisioning with zero-downtime failover drills and unified monitoring across on-prem and Azure estates.
