MeshMap — Off-Grid BLE 5.0 Tactical Mesh

Author: Vishal Verma (Cloud, Network & Systems Engineer, Sydney, NSW) | Category: Wireless Systems & P2P Networking | Key Metric: 47% Payload Compression

Technology Stack: React Native, Kotlin, Java, BLE 5.0 Coded PHY, NativeWind

Overview

An infrastructure-free peer-to-peer (P2P) tactical mapping and messaging protocol over raw Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0 advertisements.

Architecture & Technical Implementation

MeshMap is a decentralized, infrastructure-free peer-to-peer (P2P) mapping and messaging system designed for deep-wilderness, disaster-struck, and tactically compromised environments.

Instead of relying on internet connectivity or establishing power-heavy Bluetooth pairings, the application leverages raw Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertisements to broadcast location telemetry and chat messages asynchronously into the ambient airwaves.

Under the hood, it features a native Android layer written in Kotlin and Java that uses runtime Reflection to bypass standard SDK constraints, forcing the hardware radio to scan across all physical layers including the long-range Coded PHY.

To fit complex GPS coordinates into legacy 31-byte BLE payloads, MeshMap uses a custom Base36 offset-shifting compression algorithm that reduces the spatial data payload by 47%.

Key Outcomes

The resulting application enables critical off-grid coordination across different devices by concurrently broadcasting over legacy 1M PHY and Extended Coded PHY channels, bridging the gap between legacy consumer hardware and cutting-edge Bluetooth 5.0 capabilities.
