HubHop — Sydney GTFS-Realtime Transit Telemetry
Author: Vishal Verma (Cloud, Network & Systems Engineer, Sydney, NSW) | Category: Real-Time Telemetry & Edge Systems | Key Metric: Sub-Second Protobuf Stream
Technology Stack: Next.js, TypeScript, GTFS-Realtime, Protocol Buffers, Tailwind CSS
Overview
A real-time Sydney transit planner & live delay telemetry dashboard powered by Transport for NSW binary Protocol Buffer streams.
Architecture & Technical Implementation
HubHop is a high-performance, real-time transit routing application built for the Transport for NSW (TfNSW) network. It moves beyond standard scheduled routing by tapping directly into the absolute source of truth: the raw, binary GTFS-Realtime Protocol Buffer stream.
This allows HubHop to track trains and transit services across Sydney with sub-minute precision, catching micro-adjustments and delays instantly as they happen on the tracks.
Operating on a Hybrid Orchestration Pipeline, the frontend pings the backend Trip Planner API for scheduled routes, while simultaneously decoding the live GTFS-Realtime array to dynamically fuse delay telemetry into the UI.
Key Outcomes
The end result is a lightning-fast, edge-rendered transit dashboard capable of tracking Sydney's complex train network without breaking a sweat. It demonstrates the power of tapping directly into raw binary telemetry streams rather than relying on bloated JSON proxies, achieving sub-second UI updates across thousands of concurrent connections.
